Eighteen Unmasks

EpisodeEp. 225

Android 18 battles Mighty Mask in an increasingly intense tournament fight. When the disguised Goten and Trunks go Super Saiyan, 18 sees through the ruse and slices their costume apart with a Destructo Disc. The boys are disqualified and flee the ring in a huff.

Little Warriors, Big Problems

Inside Babidi's ship, the Saiyans continue their frustrating wait. Dabura remains locked in meditation, and the three warriors grow increasingly restless. The Supreme Kai watches them pace and bicker, amazed that they treat the King of the Demon Realm so lightly. He tries to impress upon them just how dangerous Dabura is, but his warnings fall on confident, battle-hardened ears.

At the World Martial Arts Tournament, the battle royal between Android 18 and Mighty Mask has become the main event. Neither fighter appears to be going all out at first, exchanging basic punches and kicks that still generate more force than anything Mr. Satan could dream of producing. At one point, a stray energy blast from Mighty Mask nearly launches Satan out of the ring entirely, a reminder of how casually dangerous these fighters are.

Android 18 starts pressing her advantage, encouraged by her young daughter Marron cheering from the stands. She slams Mighty Mask into the concrete ring twice. Each time, the crowd gasps, and each time, Mighty Mask gets back up. Inside the costume, Goten and Trunks are getting desperate. They make a fateful decision: they go Super Saiyan.

The golden transformation gives them away immediately. Android 18, who knows exactly what Super Saiyan energy feels like, realizes she has been fighting two children in a trench coat. The boys, unaware they have been found out, unleash a Big Tree Cannon that carves a massive chunk out of the surrounding landscape. Android 18 recognizes that letting them continue could endanger the crowd. She fires a Destructo Disc with surgical precision, slicing through the Mighty Mask costume and revealing Goten and Trunks to the stunned audience. The announcer disqualifies them on the spot for entering as a team, and the two boys fly off shouting that the tournament was stupid anyway.

A Disguise That Could Only Fool Humans

The Mighty Mask gag is one of the Buu Saga's most beloved bits of comedy, and this episode is its payoff. The joke works on multiple levels. On the surface, it is absurd that two small children stacked inside a costume could fool anyone. But in a world where Mr. Satan is the reigning champion and no one understands ki, it is entirely plausible. Normal humans simply cannot detect the signs that Android 18 picks up instantly.

Android 18's decision to end the fight is motivated by pragmatism, not malice. She recognizes that Goten and Trunks are powerful enough to cause serious collateral damage if the fight escalates, and she acts decisively to prevent that. It is a moment that shows her growth as a character. She has gone from a villain who destroyed cities to a mother who protects innocent bystanders, even in the middle of a competition she wants to win.

The Destructo Disc callback is also a nice touch. Originally Krillin's signature technique, seeing his wife employ it with such precision creates a fun sense of family continuity within the Z Fighter roster.

Super Saiyan Kids and Tournament Chaos

The anime extends this fight considerably beyond what appears in the manga. In the original manga version, Goten and Trunks never land a clean hit on Android 18, and the whole confrontation wraps up quickly. The anime gives the boys more screen time and more success, letting them trade blows on more even terms before the unmasking. It is a change that benefits both the comedy and the action.

Dabura's continued meditation adds an undercurrent of tension beneath the comedy. Every minute he spends preparing is a minute the Saiyans spend idle, a strategic choice on Babidi's part. The episode ends with Dabura declaring himself ready, and Babidi makes an ominous observation: the more evil Dabura cultivates within himself, the more firmly he falls under Babidi's control. This detail reveals the parasitic nature of Babidi's magic, which feeds on darkness rather than simply commanding obedience.
