Tōshirō Hitsugaya

Hitsugaya carries the frame and face of a child, a fact that trails him everywhere, framed by turquoise eyes and a shock of spiked white hair that turns heads whenever he visits the living world. His captain's dress is the sleeveless haori, worn with a green sash slung across the shoulders and fastened by a star-shaped clasp, and because his blade runs longer than most, that sash carries its sheath on his back rather than at the hip. Off duty in Karakura he swaps the robes for a black golf shirt and gray trousers. His look shifts over time: his hair lay flatter before his captaincy, grew a long fringe held up by a bandanna ahead of the war with the Wandenreich, and changed drastically once Giselle Gewelle turned him into a zombie, leaving him in a long white trench coat, double-breasted and edged with black lapels, worn over pale trousers and dark-lined boots.

Serious and composed, Hitsugaya stands in sharp contrast to his carefree lieutenant, though the two remain close and she follows his lead without argument on any assignment that matters. He has little patience for showing off or clowning around, dislikes summer heat, and bristles at anything that paints him as a child, a barb that stings because he has never grown despite his best efforts. He tolerates the endless teasing that Shinigami and enemies alike aim his way, letting most of it slide, but he draws a hard line at his title: after working so hard for the rank, he insists on being addressed as Captain Hitsugaya and answers sharply when it is withheld. Only a few slip past that rule without rebuke, chiefly his childhood friend Momo Hinamori, whom he guards fiercely, and Ichigo Kurosaki, whom he forever corrects. His favorite foods run to watermelon and amanattō, and a childhood fondness for long afternoon naps still follows him, rooted in his hope of one day growing tall.

A genuine prodigy, Hitsugaya entered the Shinigami Academy at his very first attempt, graduated in a single year atop every class, and rose to become the youngest captain in Soul Society's history, his mind sharp enough that Shunsui judges he could one day surpass him. His spiritual pressure carries the same freezing chill as his sword, so intense that as an untrained child it iced over his own home. He is a master swordsman who often fights with his blade still sealed, a capable hand at Shunpo, Kidō, and close combat, and a shrewd tactician who improvises fresh uses for his ice when pressed. His Zanpakutō, Hyōrinmaru, releases with the words Sit Upon the Frozen Heavens and commands water and ice on a scale that bends the weather itself, earning its rank as the strongest ice Zanpakutō in Soul Society. Its Bankai, Daiguren Hyōrinmaru, armors him in dragon-shaped ice with wings and a tail and feeds techniques such as Sennen Hyōrō, Hyōten Hyakkasō, and Ryūsenka. After eighteen months of training he completes that Bankai, aging himself into an adult body to reach its full potential and gaining the power to suspend the very function of whatever his ice encases, as when he froze and split Gerard Valkyrie's sword while nullifying its ability.
