Tien Shinhan faces his former master, the now-cybernetic Mercenary Tao, in the first quarterfinal match. When Tao draws a hidden blade and cannon to kill his former student, Tien proves his growth by dismantling every attack with ease.
The opening quarterfinal pits Tien Shinhan against the man who trained him in the ways of assassination. For the first ten minutes, neither fighter moves, a testament to Tien's flawless defensive posture. Master Shen attempts to break the stalemate by telepathically distracting Tien, giving Tao an opening. Despite the interference, Tien quickly proves that he has grown far beyond his former master's level, effortlessly handling Tao's strikes and even attempting to walk him out of the ring peacefully.
Tao refuses to accept defeat gracefully. He detaches one cybernetic hand to reveal a concealed blade and lunges at Tien, drawing blood with a cut across his chest. The announcer calls for disqualification, but Tao ignores him and vows to kill Tien, the announcer, and every Turtle School student present. Tien breaks the blade with his bare hands, and when Tao resorts to his Super Dodon Wave cannon, Tien destroys the blast without flinching. A single devastating punch to Tao's stomach ends the fight. Tien returns the unconscious Tao to Master Shen with a final warning to never return.
The ten-minute standoff between Tien and Tao builds tension before the action erupts. Tao's hidden blade draws blood and leaves a scar on Tien that will remain for the rest of his life, never healed by any means. When Tao threatens to kill everyone present, Krillin and Yamcha step forward to help, but Tien refuses their aid, making this a personal matter. The moment Tien shatters the blade and tanks the Super Dodon Wave, the gap between master and student becomes undeniable. Shen and Tao depart the tournament with threats of vengeance, marking their final appearance in the original series.
This match represents Tien's complete rejection of the Crane School's philosophy of assassination and revenge. The scar Tao leaves on Tien's chest is never healed, serving as a permanent reminder of where he came from. This episode marks the final appearance of Master Shen in the franchise and Mercenary Tao's last appearance until the Cell Games Saga in Dragon Ball Z. The next quarterfinal between Goku and the furious "Anonymous" woman is about to begin.
