Chiaotzu, badly hurt, is rushed to the hospital with Bulma and Launch accompanying him. Meanwhile, the remaining competitors push through their brackets, and the eight quarterfinalists are revealed: Goku, Tien Shinhan, Krillin, Yamcha, a mysterious anonymous woman, Piccolo (as "Ma Junior"), Mercenary Tao, and the peculiar Hero.

As the bracket is set, the first quarterfinal match between Tien Shinhan and Mercenary Tao promises to be more than just a fight; it is a reckoning between student and former master.

This episode bridges the preliminary rounds and the quarterfinals of the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, the final tournament arc of Dragon Ball. The return of Mercenary Tao as a cyborg and the mysterious presence of "Ma Junior" raise the stakes significantly. Tien's decision to face his former master represents his complete break from the Crane School. This is also the last appearance of Launch's gentle form in the original Dragon Ball series.
