The Truth Behind the Stolen Body

Despite Beerus's assurance that destroying Zamasu should have fixed the future, Future Trunks remains unconvinced. He resolves to return and verify for himself. Goku insists on going along, and Vegeta agrees after telling Future Trunks that if the future truly is safe, he must never return to the past again. Bulma tags along to pilot the return trip. Before departing, Future Trunks explains the mechanics of time travel to his younger self, describing how the present and future are separate worlds and how his interventions created divergent paths for the same people.

Upon landing in the alternate timeline, the group immediately realizes the future is unchanged. The devastation remains, and Goku Black's presence is still felt. After finding the resistance base, Future Trunks feeds an unconscious Future Mai a Senzu Bean through a kiss, which baffles Goku, who seems to have no understanding of what kissing is. This prompts Vegeta to berate him, pointing out that Goku is married.

The Saiyans soon confront Goku Black and Future Zamasu. When Goku tells Goku Black they know his identity, that Zamasu used the Super Dragon Balls to create a duplicate of Goku, Black corrects them. The truth is far more personal. He is Zamasu, the actual Zamasu, who used the Super Dragon Balls to switch bodies with Goku. He then hunted down and killed the Goku who was trapped in Zamasu's original body. The villain did not create a copy; he stole Goku's existence entirely.

The Weight of a Stolen Life

Goku Black's true identity as Zamasu in a stolen body reframes every previous encounter. His familiarity with Goku's fighting style, his growing power after each battle, and his divine ki all stem from a deliberate act of identity theft rather than mere imitation. The revelation also carries personal horror: the real Goku in that timeline was killed while inhabiting Zamasu's weaker body, unable to defend himself. This makes Goku Black one of the most calculated villains in Dragon Ball history, someone who weaponized his enemy's own strength against him.

Beerus Was Wrong

Future Trunks's skepticism proves justified. Destroying the present Zamasu did not alter the alternate timeline at all, confirming what Trunks argued from experience: events in separate timelines operate independently. This carries significant narrative weight because it means the heroes cannot rely on divine shortcuts. They must return to the future and defeat Goku Black and Future Zamasu directly, with no cosmic safety net. Bulma's presence in the future adds both logistical support and vulnerability to the mission going forward.
