Future Trunks spars with his father, witnessing Super Saiyan Blue for the first time, while Gowasu and Zamasu travel through time to observe the Babarians. The episode ends with a shocking summons from Grand Zeno himself.
Future Trunks trains through mental imagery, repeatedly fighting and losing to Goku Black in his mind while Mai and Shu look on. Mai even imagines her own dramatic farewell, asking Trunks for a final kiss. Meanwhile, Bulma and her father put the finishing touches on the rebuilt Time Machine, with some unexpected technical help from Pilaf, whose engineering knowledge surprises everyone.
Whis returns to Earth alongside Beerus and Goku to share what they learned in Universe 10. Trunks struggles to accept that the Zamasu they encountered might not be Goku Black, though Beerus insists the mystery runs deeper. After the gods depart, Vegeta invites his son to spar, eager to gauge how strong Future Trunks has become during his years of fighting alone.
On the Sacred World of the Kai in Universe 10, Gowasu uses the Time Rings to take Zamasu one thousand years into Babari's future. Despite the passage of time, the Babarians remain violent, which only strengthens Zamasu's growing hatred for mortals. Back on Earth, Vegeta powers up to Super Saiyan Blue, leaving Future Trunks awestruck. Though completely outmatched, Trunks finds comfort in how powerful his father and Goku have become. Vegeta, however, scolds him for being satisfied, insisting true Saiyans strive for strength at all times. The episode closes on Beerus' planet, where Grand Zeno unexpectedly contacts them, requesting to meet Goku.
This episode draws a clear parallel between two mentorships. Gowasu tries to teach Zamasu patience and the value of mortal development, while Vegeta teaches Future Trunks that a Saiyan's drive to grow stronger should never depend on the presence of enemies. Both students receive the lesson, but their responses diverge sharply. Zamasu sees the Babarians' continued violence as proof that mortals are irredeemable. Future Trunks sees his father's overwhelming power as reassurance rather than motivation. Vegeta's frustration and Gowasu's unease both foreshadow the consequences of these incomplete lessons.
Episode 54 advances several plot threads at once. The Time Machine's repair signals the return trip to confront Goku Black. Gowasu and Zamasu's journey to Babari plants the seeds that will eventually push Zamasu toward his plan to exterminate all mortals. Zeno's sudden interest in Goku introduces the most powerful being in the multiverse to the story, a thread that will carry enormous weight later in the series. The debut of Super Saiyan Blue through Vegeta's eyes also marks Future Trunks' first glimpse of the divine level his father has reached.
