A Wish With Consequences

On the surface below the Lookout, Bulma and her companions summon the Eternal Dragon Shenron with the complete set of Dragon Balls. The original plan is straightforward: revive the spectators killed by Vegeta at the tournament and give those innocent people a second chance at life. However, Goku arrives on the scene and immediately sees a problem with the timing. Using the Dragon Balls now would prevent them from making wishes later, when the casualties from Buu's ongoing global rampage will be astronomically higher. After careful consideration, Goku asks Shenron to revive everyone who died that day, a broader wish that covers all of Buu's victims as well. He then returns the Dragon Balls to their inert stone state, preserving them for the critical wishes that will inevitably be needed in the battles ahead.

Gathering at the Lookout

With the wish granted and the Dragon Balls preserved for future need, Goku uses Instant Transmission to bring Bulma, Chi-Chi, Yamcha, and the rest of the group up to the Lookout. The floating palace serves as the safest refuge available, positioned far above Buu's current path of destruction. When the group learns that both Vegeta and Gohan have apparently fallen in battle, the news is devastating. Grief overtakes the gathering. Only Videl refuses to accept the verdict, clinging to a deep, unshakeable conviction that Gohan is still alive somewhere.

Rescue on the Sacred World

Videl's stubborn faith proves to be well-placed after all. On the Sacred World of the Kai, Kibito has been resurrected by the very same wish that Shenron granted to revive those who died that day. He locates the gravely wounded Supreme Kai first and heals him with his divine restoration powers. Together, the two discover Gohan clinging to life in the rubble of the battlefield, his body shattered but his spirit remarkably intact. They carefully transport him to the Sacred World, where the peaceful environment and divine energy will allow him to recover. More importantly, the Sacred World offers opportunities for training and growth that do not exist anywhere else in the universe.

Shock and Grief

Back at the Lookout, the mood is overwhelmingly heavy and somber. Bulma struggles to process the confirmation that Vegeta sacrificed himself, while Chi-Chi is consumed by grief over the apparent loss of her eldest son. The group must come to terms with the devastating reality that their most powerful protectors have been either killed or scattered to the far reaches of the cosmos. All of their remaining hopes now rest on two young boys who have yet to even begin learning a technique none of them fully understand. The weight of the entire world has fallen onto very small and untested shoulders, and the clock is already ticking.
