Gohan narrowly dodges Jaco's cannon blast and reveals his identity to the galactic patrolman, who explains Watagash's parasitic abilities. Cocoa brings Gohan to her apartment under the pretense of rehearsing lines, but Barry Kahn has coerced her into setting up a compromising photo opportunity. Cocoa has a change of heart and prevents photos from being taken inside, but the next morning on the rooftop, Barry captures images of Cocoa kissing Gohan and him removing his Great Saiyaman helmet.
Barry takes the photos directly to Videl, attempting to paint Gohan as unfaithful while making another pass at her. Videl sees through his manipulation completely and firmly rejects him. Enraged and humiliated, Barry becomes the perfect host for Watagash, who possesses him and transforms him into a massive, monstrous creature. The possessed Barry overpowers Gohan and kidnaps Pan, leaving a message that he will be waiting at the TV station.
Gohan arrives and fights through three escalating stages of Barry's mutation, each more powerful than the last. When Barry grows to building size, Jaco arrives ready to destroy him with his cannon, but Gohan refuses. He will not let Pan witness a death, and he insists on saving Barry despite everything. Blasted into the upper atmosphere, Gohan hears Videl and Pan calling for him. He transforms into Super Saiyan beneath his Great Saiyaman helmet and fires a Super Kamehameha, which he publicly dubs the "Super Great Saiyaman Beam" to protect his identity. The blast separates Watagash from Barry and ends the threat. The footage becomes part of the film, which becomes a box office hit.
The emotional core of this episode is Gohan's refusal to take the easy path. He could let Jaco vaporize the possessed Barry and end the threat instantly, but he chooses the harder road: saving everyone, including the man who tried to destroy his family. This mirrors the compassion his father shows toward enemies but comes from a distinctly Gohan motivation rooted in protecting innocence rather than seeking worthy opponents.
The moment where Videl and Pan express unwavering faith in Gohan while the rest of the onlookers believe he is finished is a powerful character beat. Videl's absolute confidence in her husband, without a shred of doubt, reinforces that their relationship is built on deep mutual understanding.
Cocoa's decision to blackmail Barry into silence with the knowledge that he was the monster attacking the city is a satisfying resolution that keeps Gohan's identity intact. The film's success within the story's world adds a meta layer, as the fictional Great Saiyaman movie mirrors the real entertainment we are watching. Goku's admission that he fell asleep during the movie because real battles are more exciting provides a characteristically blunt but honest perspective.
This marks the first on-screen kiss in Dragon Ball history and the first time Gohan fights as a Super Saiyan while wearing his complete Great Saiyaman helmet.
