The Hermit and the Demon

The stranger accuses Goku of stealing his breakfast. Goku notices a Dragon Ball hanging around the man's neck and immediately assumes he works with Tambourine. However, after a closer look, Goku realizes the ball is the One-Star, not the Four-Star that Tambourine stole from him. The two fight briefly before the misunderstanding is resolved.

The stranger introduces himself as Yajirobe, a wandering swordsman who found the Dragon Ball three years ago in the jungle and has been wearing it as a necklace ever since. Their conversation is interrupted when Cymbal, King Piccolo's dragon-like offspring, descends from the sky to claim the ball. Goku recognizes the creature's resemblance to Tambourine and the two argue over who gets to fight it.

A game of rock-paper-scissors settles the dispute in Yajirobe's favor. What follows is swift and decisive: Yajirobe draws his katana and cleaves Cymbal clean in half with a single devastating stroke. King Piccolo senses his son's death through their psychic link and howls in anguish. Meanwhile, Master Roshi relocates the group to a different island for safety. Bulma finishes the freezing capsule, and Krillin's body is preserved until the Dragon Balls can be used again.

Standout Moments

Yajirobe's entrance is one of the saga's best surprises. His casual destruction of Cymbal, a demon strong enough to be trusted with collecting Dragon Balls, establishes him as a formidable fighter despite his slovenly appearance. The rock-paper-scissors scene adds a moment of levity before the violence.

King Piccolo's psychic reaction to Cymbal's death adds emotional weight to the demon side of the story. For the first time, Piccolo is shown genuinely mourning one of his children, setting up his personal vendetta against Goku and Yajirobe.

Story Placement

Yajirobe's introduction adds a completely unpredictable element to the saga. His possession of a Dragon Ball and his unexpected combat ability make him both a target for King Piccolo and an unlikely asset for Goku. Cymbal's death is the first real blow against King Piccolo's forces and sets the stage for a furious retaliation.
