Shenron appears unbidden, heals Goku, and grants one final wish to revive everyone killed by Super 17 and the Shadow Dragons. Goku climbs onto Shenron's back for one last journey, visiting Krillin, Piccolo, and old friends before the Dragon Balls merge with his body and he vanishes. A century later, his legacy lives on.
Shenron heals Goku and tells the Z Fighters that the Dragon Balls will not grant wishes for a very long time. Goku asks for just one more, for old times' sake: to bring back everyone killed by Super 17 and the Shadow Dragons. Shenron agrees. As the wish takes effect, Goku climbs onto the dragon's back. Vegeta runs over and demands to know where he is going, then realizes that Goku is leaving to fulfill a purpose alongside Shenron.
Goku tells Vegeta that Earth's protection now falls to him. The Dragon Balls begin circling Goku's body as Shenron lifts into the sky. Chi-Chi tells Goku to be home for dinner, and Bulma, remembering the sixteen-year-old girl who once went searching for the Dragon Balls and found Goku instead, quietly says she will miss him.
Shenron carries Goku on a final journey across the world. They stop at Kame House, where Krillin, revived by the wish, greets his oldest friend. The two share stories about the old days and even spar playfully before Goku fades away. Master Roshi thanks Shenron for the Dragon Balls. Goku also visits Piccolo, who now patrols Hell to keep its residents in line. Goku tells the Namekian warrior that he will find a way out someday, then leaves without saying goodbye.
Old friends catch glimpses of Goku riding Shenron across the sky. Yamcha and Puar look up from fixing their car. Tien and Chiaotzu pause their training. Goku, feeling tired, lies down on Shenron's back. The seven Dragon Balls enter his body one by one, the Four-Star Ball settling into his heart. Then Goku vanishes, and Shenron lets out one final roar before disappearing.
A century passes. The 64th World Martial Arts Tournament is underway, and an elderly Pan sits in the stands as the last living member of the original Z Fighters. Her grandson, Goku Jr., competes in the Junior Division wearing Goku's old gi. Beside Pan sits a woman who resembles Bulma, a descendant of the Briefs family, whose son Vegeta Jr. is Goku Jr.'s opponent.
Both boys transform into Super Saiyans during their match, astonishing the crowd. Pan looks across the stadium and sees an adult Goku watching from the stands. She rushes to find him, but when she reaches the spot, he is gone. Goku walks unseen through the crowd as a montage of his life plays out: from Grandpa Gohan finding him as a baby, through every saga and every friendship. He catches his Power Pole, climbs onto the Flying Nimbus, and says his final words: 'Til we meet again.'
