Frieza's Death Saucer closes in on Goku, who dodges at the last second, leaving only an afterimage to be sliced apart. Frieza creates a second disc and sends both spinning after the Super Saiyan. Goku weaves through the air, staying just ahead of the pursuing blades while looking for an opening. He fires a ki blast near Frieza's position, throwing up a cloud of dust and debris. Blinded, Frieza barely notices one of his own discs screaming toward him and leaps upward to dodge it. But Goku anticipated the move and slams an elbow into Frieza's skull from above, then follows with a knee to the gut and a series of open-handed slaps across the face.

On Earth, Vegeta watches through his mind's eye with satisfaction, convinced that both Goku and Frieza will perish on Namek. He flashes back to his years as Frieza's enforcer, recalling a mission where he, Nappa, and Raditz conquered a planet in three days only to be mocked and belittled by Frieza, Zarbon, and Dodoria. Nappa had told him the truth about Planet Vegeta's destruction, and Vegeta resolved to endure the humiliation until he grew strong enough to overthrow the tyrant. Now, from a distance, he watches that dream play out through someone else's fists.

Back on Namek, Goku fires a blast at Frieza's feet to shake the remaining disc loose. As Frieza prepares to retaliate, Goku spots the danger first and shouts a warning. But it is too late. Frieza's own Death Saucer carves through him from behind, severing his body at the waist and taking his left arm. The self-proclaimed emperor of the universe lies in pieces on the ground, cut down by the very attack he created. King Kai senses the outcome and, struggling to find words, simply tells the others that Frieza is "not feeling quite complete." As the tyrant bleeds out, he abandons all pride and begs Goku for mercy. Goku refuses at first, furious at the countless lives Frieza has destroyed, but ultimately cannot leave even his worst enemy to die so pathetically. He transfers a portion of his own energy into Frieza's broken body.

Goku giving energy to a dismembered Frieza is one of the most polarizing moments in Dragon Ball history. King Kai screams at him not to do it. Logic says to let the tyrant die. Yet Goku acts from a place beyond strategy or self-preservation. He simply cannot stand by and watch a helpless being expire, no matter how evil. This is the purest expression of who Goku is: a warrior who fights without hatred and shows mercy without calculation.

The irony cuts deep. Frieza, who exterminated entire civilizations and laughed while doing it, is kept alive by the compassion of the very race he tried to erase. It is a poetic reversal that elevates the scene from simple action to something approaching genuine tragedy.

The anime-exclusive flashback to Vegeta, Nappa, and Raditz serving as Frieza's mercenaries adds significant backstory that the manga never provides. We see the Saiyan prince enduring ridicule from Frieza's inner circle, swallowing his rage, and quietly plotting his revenge. It humanizes Vegeta in a way that his present-day arrogance often obscures.

A continuity quirk worth noting: in this flashback, Raditz learns about Frieza destroying Planet Vegeta, yet when he arrives on Earth in the very first Dragon Ball Z episode, he tells Goku the false cover story about asteroids being responsible. Whether Raditz was protecting Goku or simply forgot is left to fan interpretation, but the inconsistency has fueled debate for decades.
