Father and Son Collide

With Piccolo's training complete, Gohan is ready to measure his restored abilities against the strongest benchmark available: his father. The group gathers in the wasteland after a meal at a nearby restaurant, where Piccolo suggests a two-on-two practice match. Gohan and Piccolo face off against Goku and Tien, with ring-out rules simulating the tournament format. Tien warns Goku to treat this as practice, but Goku suspects they may be the ones who need to worry.

The teamwork between Gohan and Piccolo is immediately apparent. While Goku and Gohan trade blows in the center, Piccolo charges a massive attack in the background. When Tien moves to interrupt, Gohan blocks his path, buying Piccolo the time to unleash a devastating energy wave from his entire body. Goku weathers the blast and compliments their coordination, acknowledging that Gohan has recovered his fighting instincts. The mountain serving as their arena is destroyed in the process, ending the tag match.

Gohan insists on a solo fight against Goku. In Universe 10, Gowasu struggles with team selection, still haunted by his poor judgment with Zamasu. Rumsshi and Kusu arrive with ten muscular warriors led by Murichim, though their need for constant protein drink breaks undermines confidence in their readiness.

The father-son duel begins in earnest. Gohan, in his Potential Unleashed state, declares he is pursuing an ultimate form that differs from Goku's path of Saiyan transformations. Their Kamehameha clash shakes the ground hard enough for Vegeta to sense it from West City. Goku escalates to Super Saiyan Blue with Kaio-ken, and the resulting shockwave stuns everyone in the vicinity. Gohan collapses after attempting one last strike, and Goku catches him before he hits the ground. Impressed by his son's growth and resolve, Goku names Gohan the leader of Team Universe 7, trusting his analytical mind to guide the team through the chaos of the battle royal.

Earning the Right to Lead

Goku's decision to appoint Gohan as team leader is one of the most significant acts of trust between the two characters. Goku has never been a strategist; he fights on instinct and thrives in the moment. By naming Gohan the leader, he acknowledges that the Tournament of Power demands qualities he does not possess: planning, coordination, and the willingness to prioritize the team's survival over individual battles.

Gohan's declaration that he is pursuing a different kind of strength is a defining character moment. While Goku chases ever-higher Super Saiyan tiers, Gohan commits to maximizing his Potential Unleashed state on its own terms. This philosophical divergence between father and son adds texture to their relationship. They share Saiyan blood, but their approaches to power are fundamentally different.

The brief detour to Universe 10 provides comic relief while subtly establishing Universe 10 as one of the weaker tournament contenders. Murichim's team of bodybuilders who need protein breaks mid-training suggests that raw muscle will not translate to effectiveness in the ring, foreshadowing their eventual struggles.

The Final Hours Before Battle

With only four and a half hours remaining before the Tournament of Power, Episode 90 closes the training and recruitment arcs and shifts focus toward final preparations. Gohan's appointment as team leader is a narrative pivot point; from here forward, the responsibility for Universe 7's strategy rests on his shoulders rather than Goku's.

This entire episode is exclusive to the anime. The manga did not depict a tag-team sparring session or Gohan's solo challenge to Goku, making this a unique contribution that deepens the father-son dynamic beyond what the source material provided.

The first transformation from Super Saiyan 2 directly into Super Saiyan Blue occurs here, a technical milestone that demonstrates how freely Goku can now navigate between divine and mortal power states. Combined with Kaio-ken layered on top, it represents the full extent of Goku's known power at this point in the saga, with the as-yet-unknown Ultra Instinct waiting in the wings.
