Rescue Mission Above the Clouds

Despite hearing the truth about universal erasure, Android 17 initially remains indifferent. Goku makes one final appeal, mentioning that the prize includes the Super Dragon Balls, which can grant any wish regardless of limitations. Before 17 can fully consider the offer, an enormous poacher spaceship descends on Monster Island, using binding light beams to abduct every animal on the island, including the rare Minotaur 17 has sworn to protect.

Unable to stop the ship from the ground, Goku grabs 17 and uses Instant Transmission to teleport inside the vessel. They find themselves surrounded by captive animals from multiple planets, confirming that this is a large-scale galactic poaching operation. An alarm triggers, and soldiers flood their position. Goku engages them while 17 reminds him to avoid damaging the ship, as the animals would perish if the hull ruptured.

Android 17 splits off to confront the poacher boss directly, leaving Goku to handle the remaining soldiers. The boss summons his strongest fighters, but 17 dispatches them effortlessly and demands the animals be returned. Cornered, the boss pulls out a remote device and threatens to self-destruct the entire ship. In a moment of selfless resolve, 17 grabs the boss and forces both of them through the hull into outer space, telling Goku to protect the animals and give his regards to his family.

Goku refuses to lose a potential teammate and goes Super Saiyan Blue. He uses Instant Transmission to reach 17 and the boss in space, then teleports everyone to King Kai's planet, an echo of how he handled Cell's self-destruction years earlier. Dende contacts them to reveal that the boss was bluffing all along. The remote triggers nothing but fireworks and confetti, leaving everyone stunned. With the animals safely returned, Jaco arrives to claim credit for capturing the poachers. Grateful for Goku's help, Android 17 finally agrees to join Team Universe 7, requesting to use the Super Dragon Balls to wish for a luxury cruise ship for his family.

Sacrifice and the Callback to Cell

Android 17's willingness to sacrifice himself for the animals directly parallels Goku's sacrifice during the Cell Games, and the show leans into this connection by having Goku teleport to King Kai's planet with the supposed bomb. The symmetry is deliberate: the Android who was once a tool of destruction now throws himself into danger to protect innocent life, while the Saiyan who once died this way has learned enough to save everyone.

Beerus's nightmare about Goku dying aboard the spaceship is a small but revealing character moment. The God of Destruction, who once tried to destroy Earth over pudding, now subconsciously fears losing the warrior his universe depends on. It suggests a depth of concern that Beerus would never openly admit.

The poacher boss's bluff resolving into fireworks is classic Dragon Ball humor, deflating a tense moment with absurdity. Yet it does not diminish 17's heroism; his willingness to die was genuine, regardless of whether the threat turned out to be real. His character is defined by the choice he made, not the outcome.

The Final Recruit Falls Into Place

Episode 87 concludes the Android 17 recruitment arc, a three-episode sequence that reintroduced one of Dragon Ball's most enigmatic characters. His wish for a cruise ship, while comedic in its modesty compared to the cosmic scale of the Super Dragon Balls, reinforces his grounded personality. Android 17 fights not for glory or power but for the simple things: his family, his animals, and the quiet life he has built for himself.

The Galactic Poachers subplot is entirely exclusive to the anime. In the manga, 17 agrees to join after learning that Krillin, his brother-in-law who helped remove his bomb, will also be competing. The anime version takes a more action-oriented approach, using the poacher crisis to demonstrate 17's values before he commits to the team.

With Android 17 on board, Team Universe 7 appears complete at ten members. The clock now shows 23 hours and 20 minutes remaining, and the pace of preparation across the multiverse continues to accelerate toward the tournament's start.
