Outrageous Octagon

EpisodioEp. 151

Found in the Garden

Goku and Chi-Chi arrive at Mount Frappe, a frozen peak where the Bansho Fan is rumored to be preserved inside an iceberg. A violent snowstorm drives them to the home of Grandma Hakkake, an elderly woman living in the nearby forest. She explains that women are forbidden on the mountain because their presence triggers the storms, and she reveals that the mountain's snow can also extinguish supernatural fire. Goku heads up alone while Chi-Chi stays behind.

On the mountain, the Pilaf Gang has crash-landed after their ship was wrecked by the same storm. Pilaf, Shu, and Mai attack Goku in their battlesuits with rockets and flamethrowers, but the snowstorm freezes them solid before their weapons can reach him. Goku explains the woman rule, and Pilaf kicks Mai off the mountainside to stop the storm. After Pilaf and Shu attempt another futile attack, Goku collects a massive snowball and flies back toward Chi-Chi, only to watch it melt completely during the trip, leaving him with a tiny useless lump. Meanwhile, Hakkake has been putting Chi-Chi through "housewife lessons," making her clean the entire house and sweep the yard. While searching for a dustpan, Chi-Chi discovers the actual Bansho Fan in Hakkake's garden. The Pilaf Gang makes one last attempt to steal it, but when Shu waves the fan as ordered, its power sends Pilaf and Mai flying back into Mount Frappe. Hakkake gifts Chi-Chi a jar of rare honey and wishes the couple well. They race back to Fire Mountain, but to everyone's horror, even the legendary Bansho Fan cannot extinguish the flames.

Comedy, Cold, and a Cruel Twist

The snowstorm mechanic that punishes female presence on the mountain creates a natural obstacle and separates the couple for parallel storylines. Goku's snowball plan failing because it melts in transit provides classic Dragon Ball humor. Hakkake's housewife lessons are a comedic detour that accidentally leads Chi-Chi to the fan. The Pilaf Gang's final attempt to steal the fan backfires spectacularly when they test its power on themselves. The episode's biggest punch comes at the very end: after all the effort to find the Bansho Fan, it fails against the supernatural flames at Fire Mountain, sending the quest in yet another direction.

The Pilaf Gang's Final Bow

This episode marks the last appearance of the Pilaf Gang in their original adult forms. They do not appear again until Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and Dragon Ball Super as children, and Dragon Ball GT as elderly versions. The Bansho Fan failing at the end subverts expectations and forces one more leg of the journey. Hakkake's housewife training foreshadows Chi-Chi's eventual role as one of anime's most formidable homemakers. The rare honey she gives Chi-Chi becomes important in the final episode.
