Renji Abarai

Renji has brown eyes and long crimson hair that he ties high in a ponytail, worn over a sharp widow's peak. Bold tribal tattoos spread across much of his body, having crept outward since his student days to cover his back, chest, limbs, and even his brow. Over the usual black Shinigami robes he tends to add some kind of headgear, either costly glasses from a favored Seireitei shop or a plain white band while he saves up to replace yet another broken pair. Notably, he never pins on his lieutenant's badge. Off duty he lounges in white, pink-flowered sleeping clothes with a grey sash, and in the years after Yhwach's fall he trades the ponytail for a long braid.

Renji swings between moods, all swagger before a fight and sullen despair after a loss, yet he turns deadly serious once a real threat appears, ready to fight, kill, or die for whatever he believes. His fiercest attachment is to Rukia Kuchiki, the childhood friend he grew up beside in Inuzuri, the poorest district of Rukongai, where the two lost every other member of their makeshift family before entering the Shinigami academy together. When the noble Kuchiki Clan adopted Rukia away from him, that separation hardened into a lifelong drive to overtake her new brother, Byakuya Kuchiki, the very captain he now serves. Renji still carries the brawler's creed of the 11th Division, where his mentor Ikkaku Madarame taught him to fight, and Yasutora Sado likens his combative style to Ichigo Kurosaki, a one-time rival who became a close, if quarrelsome, companion. Away from battle he is fond of taiyaki and has no stomach for spicy food.

Renji entered the lieutenant ranks with high spiritual power that surged the moment he mastered Bankai and climbed again after he trained with the Royal Guard, leaving him strong enough to overpower foes who had once thrashed him. Schooled in swordsmanship by Ikkaku Madarame, he handles his unusual weapon like an extension of his arm, striking from unpredictable angles and coiling it around enemies to crush them. He leans heavily on Shunpo to cover the openings his ranged strikes leave, keeps pace with captain-class opponents, and can manage low-level binding spells and a few Hado, though rapid Kido still tends to backfire on him. Physically he is punishing, able to hurl enemies through buildings and shrug off blows that shatter the ground. His Zanpakuto, Zabimaru, releases into a segmented, whip-like blade, and its rare finisher, Higa Zekko, levitates its broken links for a single all-directional strike that leaves him defenseless afterward. His Bankai, Soo Zabimaru, arms his right hand with a serpent-skull gauntlet and a long bony tail; he can jut a blade from its jaws for cutting power or swing the skull itself as a bludgeon to smash opponents into the ground.
