Déjà vu

EpisodeEp. 81

Two Warriors in One Body

Piccolo and Frieza collide with astonishing ferocity, and for the first time since his transformation, Frieza faces an opponent who can trade blows with him evenly. Piccolo lands several clean strikes, though Frieza retaliates by slamming the Namekian into a cliff and unleashing an energy bombardment. Piccolo emerges from the rubble without a scratch, signaling that this is no ordinary rematch.

Vegeta, calculating his chances of surviving, attempts to quietly slip away from the battlefield while both heavy hitters are preoccupied. Frieza catches him immediately, smashing the Saiyan prince back into the ground before resuming his duel with Piccolo. The Namekian evades every follow-up attack with fluid precision, and when Frieza finally grabs hold of him, Piccolo delivers a revelation: he is carrying Nail inside him. Using Nail's voice, he taunts Frieza for needing a transformation yet still failing to land a decisive hit with both hands.

Dende, who had sensed something familiar in Piccolo's fighting style, is relieved to learn that Nail survived his encounter with Frieza. Powered up to his absolute maximum, Piccolo launches a blistering assault and deflects Frieza's massive energy beam right back into the tyrant's face. Gohan, Krillin, and Vegeta dare to believe that Frieza might be finished. But when the smoke clears, Frieza stands with his arms crossed, having blocked at the very last instant. The combined strength of Piccolo and Nail, formidable as it is, still cannot bridge the gap.

The Limits of Fusion

The episode title, a French term meaning "already seen," speaks to the recurring nature of the fight. Nail is essentially battling Frieza again, but this time from within Piccolo's body. The psychological dimension is fascinating: Frieza realizes he is fighting someone who intimately understands his combat style because part of that opponent already lost to him once before.

Piccolo's performance here represents both triumph and tragedy. He has achieved the power he always sought through fusion, becoming something greater than either warrior alone. Yet the narrative uses this peak to underscore how insurmountable Frieza truly is. If the strongest Namekian in existence, bolstered by another elite warrior, cannot close the deal, then the heroes need something beyond anything currently on the table. Every impressive showing against Frieza serves the same storytelling purpose: making his eventual defeat feel that much more significant.

Namekian Pride on Display

The anime expands the Piccolo-versus-Frieza duel considerably beyond its manga counterpart, adding extended exchanges and a scene where Vegeta tries to flee. In the manga, Vegeta never attempted to escape. The anime also has Dende recognize the fusion during the fight itself, whereas the manga version of Dende did not learn about it until everyone was teleported to Earth later in the saga.

This episode also marks a return to 16mm film stock after episodes 73 through 80 were shot on 35mm. The visual difference is subtle but noticeable to keen observers. From a character standpoint, Piccolo's willingness to reveal Nail's presence inside him shows a tactical confidence rare for the normally guarded Namekian. He wants Frieza to know exactly who is beating him and why.
