Rukia Kuchiki

Slight in build and standing barely under five feet, Rukia keeps her black hair at shoulder length, with a few loose strands that fall permanently across her face. Her wide violet eyes and delicate features led Byakuya to remark how closely she mirrors his late wife, Hisana. On duty she wears the black robes of the Gotei 13. The seventeen-month gap after Aizen's downfall finds her hair trimmed into a rounded bob and her arms sleeved in fingerless white wraps that climb past the elbow, a lieutenant's badge fixed to her shortened sleeve.

A decade past Yhwach's fall she lets the hair grow long again beneath a captain's white haori, and two years further on she gathers it into a ponytail worn off to one side.

Born into poverty and raised among commoners, Rukia never lost that plain-spoken humility even after joining the aristocracy, mixing easily with ordinary folk despite her refined bearing. A reserved streak runs deep in her, though; Ukitake observed that she guards her heart and struggles to let anyone in, hiding private worries from even close companions. She is a gifted actress who has talked her way past suspicious teachers and into the Kurosaki household alike.

Modern life in the living world baffles her, and she carries an unabashed love of anything rabbit-shaped, bristling whenever someone criticizes the crude bunny doodles she is proud of. When exasperation gets the better of her, she snaps out a scolding tawake, her habitual jab at anyone who tries her patience. Her tastes run to cucumber, eggs, and rice dumplings, and she is fond of scaling high perches.

Rukia and her elder sister Hisana died in the living world and arrived together in Inuzuri, one of Rukongai's poorest outer districts. Unable to feed them both, Hisana left the infant Rukia behind, and the girl scraped by alone until she fell in with a band of young thieves that included Renji Abarai, becoming their spiritual anchor. When the last of their childhood friends had died, the two survivors resolved to train as Soul Reapers and entered the Shin'o Academy. There Byakuya Kuchiki offered to adopt her into his clan, a gesture rooted in her resemblance to his deceased wife, and she graduated straight into the 13th Division.

Her mentor Kaien Shiba drew her out of her isolation and taught her to fight, until a Hollow that had killed his wife possessed his body; forced to strike him down, Rukia carried the guilt for decades. Assigned later to Karakura Town, she poured half of her power into the human teenager Ichigo Kurosaki to save his family, an act that stripped her of her abilities and set the central story rolling. Sentenced to execution once Soul Society learned of the transfer, she was rescued by Ichigo and his allies, an ordeal that finally revealed Byakuya as her adoptive brother.

Rukia went on to earn a lieutenant's post, then trained under the Royal Guard and mastered her Bankai, Hakka no Togame, using its absolute-zero cold to overcome the Sternritter As Nodt. Her sealed sword, the ice-type Sode no Shirayuki, is reckoned the loveliest blade in all of Soul Society. She ultimately succeeded Ukitake as captain of the 13th Division, married Renji, and became mother to their daughter, Ichika.
