Roronoa Zoro

A tall, heavily built fighter with lightly bronzed skin, Zoro is most quickly spotted by his cropped green hair, the trait that earns him Sanji's jab of marimo after the ball-shaped moss it resembles. A trio of matching gold hoops hangs from his left ear, and a dark bandana stays knotted around his upper arm until a serious bout sends it up to his forehead. Three blades ride bundled at his right hip beneath a green haramaki, set for a left-handed draw. The Wado Ichimonji has stayed with him without fail, whereas the other two in his set have changed hands repeatedly, each broken weapon swapped for a finer one.

Zoro's birthplace was the East Blue, and he came of age in Shimotsuki Village, descended from Wano Country's Shimotsuki bloodline and the storied samurai Ryuma; his grandmother Furiko, sister to the former daimyo Ushimaru, had left Wano behind for the East Blue. As a child he trained beside his rival and distant cousin Kuina, and after her sudden death he swore to claim the title of finest swordsman alive in her honor. Battle after battle has mapped his body with scars, chief among them the diagonal gash across his chest dealt by Dracule Mihawk at Baratie and, after the two-year separation, a lasting wound over his left eye that he now keeps shut.

He gave up bounty hunting to join Monkey D. Luffy during the Romance Dawn Arc, making him the crew's earliest recruit and its second member. Within the group he is publicly treated as the captain's right hand, and together with Luffy and Sanji he forms the lethal trio others dub the Monster Trio. His reward climbed steadily across the voyage: sixty million Berries after Arabasta, a hundred and twenty million following Enies Lobby, three hundred and twenty million after Dressrosa, and at last over a billion once Onigashima fell. His considerable bounty on reaching the Sabaody Archipelago placed him among the eleven Super Rookies, a cohort later branded the Worst Generation alongside Marshall D. Teach.

Zoro fights as a master of the Three Sword Style, gripping a katana in each hand and clamping a third between his teeth, a method that ranks him among the three deadliest members of his crew. His scars trace a long climb in skill, among them the ankle wounds he gave himself in a bid to escape Mr. 3's wax at Little Garden, and the swords gathered and lost along the way, including Sandai Kitetsu, the rusted-away Yubashiri, Shusui, and finally the legendary Enma, handed to him in Wano by Kouzuki Hiyori. He commands all three branches of Haki, the Armament and Observation varieties together with the rare Supreme King Haki that only a select few ever awaken.
